Breast Surgery
Breast surgery is a specialty that has gained more importance with the increasing number of breast cancer cases in recent years. Surgery, which aims to remove cancerous tissue from the body and improve the patient’s quality of life, achieves success with the right treatment planning. It is performed by experienced surgeons in our country.
Basic Surgical Methods:
Breast Conserving Surgery (Lumpectomy):
- Removal of cancerous tissue together with the surrounding healthy tissue.
- It is supported by radiotherapy and provides similar survival rates to mastectomy where the entire breast is removed.
- It offers better cosmetic results.
Complete Removal of the Breast (Mastectomy):
- All the tissue in the breast is removed, sometimes together with the skin and nipple.
- It is performed in advanced cancers or in patients with certain risk factors.
- Modified radical mastectomy includes removal of the axillary lymph nodes.
Breast Conservation Surgery: Who Can It Be Performed?
Unsuitable Conditions:
- Systemic diseases that cannot be treated with radiotherapy (lupus, scleroderma).
- Multiple cancer foci, extensive calcification, large tumors.
- BRCA1/BRCA2 mutation and inflammatory breast cancer cases.
Lymph node surgery
Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy:
- Determines whether the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes.
- The first lymph node is removed and examined with radioactive material.
Axillary lymph node dissection:
- If cancer has spread to the lymph nodes, they are surgically removed.
Mastectomy: When is it needed?
- It is preferred for patients for whom breast-conserving surgery is not suitable.
- Simple Mastectomy: Only the breast tissue is removed.
- Modified Radical Mastectomy: Breast tissue and axillary lymph nodes are removed.
Aesthetic Approaches After Surgery:
- Implant Methods: The breast form is reconstructed with silicone or saline implants.
- Flap Surgery: A natural appearance is achieved by utilizing your own body tissues.
Choosing the right surgical methods in breast cancer treatment is critical for the successful completion of the treatment process. In addition, aesthetic improvements also support the psychological well-being of patients.
